Role of contrasuppression in the adoptive transfer of immunity.

Abstract: The data presented in this paper show that the population of cells that adoptively transfer contact hypersensitivity are Lyt-1+ 2-, I-J- and nonadherent to V. villosa lectin. However, the adoptive transfer of immunity by this population of cells is successful only when the recipient has been treated in such a way as to impair the host immunosuppression mechanism. This population cannot, on its own, transfer immunity to adult, untreated naive recipients unless an additional population of immunoregulatory cells … Show more

“…Two types of specialized Tcs cells that modulate CS, both of which are CD4 ϩ , have been described in mice. One is nonspecific and is present in both immune and nonimmune animals (30). The second Tcs cell is Ag specific, shields immune cells against Ag-specific CD8 ϩ Ts cells, and is triggered by Ag-Ab complexes (31,32).…”

“…This could suggest an increased suppressor activity at the induc tion process of the disease as a result of the elimina tion of contrasuppressive cells [3] by splenectomy. Iv erson et al [4] studied immunoregulatory mechanisms at adoptive transfer of contact hypersensitivity and found an important role for contrasuppressive cells.…”

“…The appearance of these cells already on day 6 after sensitization makes it unlikely that the genera tion of Ts cells in our model is the consequence of a decrease in contrasuppressor signals, since anti-idiotype (anti-ld) B contrasuppressor cells, capable of blocking Ts cells, have been described in CS as occur ring on day 8 of the sensitization process [5]. How ever, it must be borne in mind that anti-ox Abs may interfere with T contrasuppressor cells [15], and this point remains to be clarified.…”
