Role of Citicoline in the Management of Traumatic Brain Injury

Abstract: Head injury is among the most devastating types of injury, specifically called Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). There is a need to diminish the morbidity related with TBI and to improve the outcome of patients suffering TBI. Among the improvements in the treatment of TBI, neuroprotection is one of the upcoming improvements. Citicoline has been used in the management of brain ischemia related disorders, such as TBI. Citicoline has biochemical, pharmacological, and pharmacokinetic characteristics that make it a pot… Show more

“…As well, CTN has anticonvulsive, sedative, and anxiolytic activities (Abdolmaleki et al 2016 ). Of interest, CTN can attenuate neuroinflammation by inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-1β, and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) with activation release of anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-10 (Al-Mosawi 2019 ; Secades 2021 ). CTN regulates neuronal energy balance by controlling ATP levels and the activity of Na + /K + -ATPase (Piamonte et al 2020 ).…”

“…CDP-choline or 5’-cytidinediphosphocholine, generically known as citicoline has been employed clinically in the management of TBI [ 123 ]. In TBI, lipid peroxidation by phospholipases [ 124 ], i.e., PLA2, has been considered to play a crucial role in the pathophysiology of TBI; the number of experimental studies demonstrated that the PLA2 inhibition by CDP-choline exhibited a beneficial effect in brain injury [ 125 ].…”
