Role of catalyst supports in biocatalysis

Abstract: Biocatalysis utilizes enzymes and microbial cells as catalysts for a wide range of applications in biotechnology. Immobilization of biocatalysts on various materials has several advantages, including the capacity for reuse, quick reaction termination, easy biocatalyst recovery and operational stability. The present article focuses on the use of material supports for developing immobilized biocatalysts in applications related to energy, environment and chemical synthesis. The work provides a comprehensive overv… Show more

“…Although, the photocatalytic performance of “pure” bismuth oxyhalide materials was low. Hence, the functionalization/activation, as for instance the formation of oxygen vacancies and defects by chemical treatment/modifications [ 70 , 74 ] or the designing of composites with conductive phases such as graphite or graphitic carbon nitride, in order to enhance the electron delocalization and as a result to prevent the e − /h + (charge carries) recombination [ 51 , 55 , 62 , 70 , 75 , 76 ], can affect positively the photocatalytic environmental remediation efficiency, as it occurred in this study where lignin-derived biochar was used as a filler towards photo-active nano-composites formation.…”

“…Enzymes, as natural catalysts, have been widely applied in terms of their unparalleled advantages, including good biocompatibility, regio-/stereoselectivity, mild reaction conditions, and cost-effectiveness . Nevertheless, enzymes are sensitive to environmental conditions, such as solution pH and temperature, which results in the lack of long-term stability . In addition, difficulties in recovery and reuse greatly hinder their practical application.…”

“…In addition, difficulties in recovery and reuse greatly hinder their practical application. To address the aforementioned issues, enzyme immobilization, which can simplify operation, achieve efficient recovery, and enhance the stability of enzymes, has become a burgeoning scientific field. , Considering their specific structure, hollow COFs have been recognized as a promising platform for enzyme immobilization . On the one hand, the hollow cavity can allow the internal contents to move around freely.…”

“…Biochar-immobilized microorganisms are produced through the adsorption of microbes on biochar, entrapment with the help of crosslinking materials, or a combination of both methods. Adsorption is a simple and inexpensive method for immobilizing microorganisms [ 129 , 130 ]. Adsorbed cells colonize the biochar after being transferred from a bulk solution to its surface.…”
