Role of canonical biplot method in the study of building stones: an example from Spanish monumental heritage

Abstract: SUMMARYIn this work, the canonical biplot (CB) method (Vicente-Villardón, 1992;Gower and Hand, 1996) is used to determine the origin, distribution, conservation and pollution state of the different types of stones used in the construction and restoration of monuments of great historical interest. The stone materials (sandstones) used in the Cathedral of Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca, Spain) have been used to assess the usefulness of the method. The age of this monument (eight centuries), together with the surround… Show more

“…The Canonical biplot method has been used in the conservation of historical buildings and monuments (Varas et al, 2005), in civil engineering (Iñigo et al, 2005;Iñigo et al, 2013) and, in the case of foods, in the study of margarines (Rui Alves and Beatriz Oliveira, 2003), but no reference has been found regarding its application to the characterization of cheeses using volatile compounds as variables.…”

“…Also, the canonical biplot has an important advantage: It is possible not only to establish the differences between groups but also to characterise the variables responsible for them (Varas et al, 2005). We divide the elements of the rows (represented by economic sectors) into k groups, which are completely different, so which separates these groups with the maximum discriminating power.…”
