Role of breast density measurement in screening for breast cancer

Abstract: Mammographic breast density is an established risk factor for breast cancer and significantly reduces the sensitivity of mammography, yet its use within breast cancer screening programs in Australia is limited. We provide a contemporary snapshot of the role of breast density measurement in screening for breast cancer and review the recent evidence for an increasing role of breast density measurement as: a predictor of breast cancer risk, a predictor of 'masking', and a biomarker to monitor effectiveness of int… Show more

“…In particular, concerns regarding overdiagnosis and subsequent overtreatment, and the harms associated with false positive recalls for assessment lead some to call for an overhaul of the system or abandoning population mammographic screening programs (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). In addition, the reduced sensitivity of mammography in those with high-mammographic density has led to question the role of supplementary screening in this group (10,11).…”

“…Physiological changes in the breast and restriction in the examination of pregnant patients delay the diagnosis, and staging should be determined as soon as the disease is diagnosed in pregnant women and treatment should be chosen by considering the stage of the disease and minimizing the risks to the fetus (18,28). “…Breast density measurements help identify and target women who could benefit from tailored screening options such as increased (or decreased) screening interval or supplemental screening via alternative modalities [4]. Breast density categories currently in use are six-class-categories (SCC) [2], Wolfe's four categories [5], and the Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) [6].…”
