The solid waste from agar processing industries in Indonesia is enormous. The waste contains numbers of macro and micro nutrient including growth hormone that can be a good source for plant fertilizer. Utilization of solid waste obtained from agar processing into fertilizer has been carried out by mixing with Sargassum powder, fish silage and Eucheuma cottonii pasta. Various concentrations of the solid waste (13, 19, 22 and 25%) and the Sargassum powder (0, 3, 6, 9, and 12%) were used in this study to obtain optimum nutrients in the formulated fertilizers i.e. growth hormone, total nitrogen and potassium. Growth hormone were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), while N content by Kjeldahl methods and K content analyzed according AOAC.The results showed that the optimum formulation was obtained from the combination of 25% solid waste and 0% Sargassum powder, which contained the highest growth hormones i.e. auxins (IAA) 46.75 ppm, gibberellin (GA3) 22.25 ppm, cytokinin-zeatin 18.50 ppm, and cytokinin-kinetin 61.00 ppm. While the potassium content was 0.43±0.001 ppm and the total nitrogen was 0.53± 0.06%. This result meets the requirements of the Minister of Agriculture Regulation No. 261/KPTS/SR.310/M/4/2019 regarding the requirements for total N in organic fertilizer. However, the total K+ does not meet the requirement. Therefore, enrichment with other organic raw material is still needed.

A pot experiment was carried out with tomato variety BINA Tomato-3 in the net house of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh from March to August, 2010 to study the effect of Indole Acetic Acid(IAA) and Boron(B) on the nutrient contents of BINA Tomato-3. There were four doses of IAA viz. 0, 20, 40 and 60 ppm and B viz. 0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 kg ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 replications. The result revealed that nutrient contents of tomato fruits and plants such as N, P, Ca, Mg and B were significantly influenced by the application of IAA and B. The highest N (0.70%), Ca (0.69%), Mg (0.80%) in tomato fruits and highest N (0.40%), Ca (0.93%), Mg (0.90%) in tomato plants were obtained in 60 ppm IAA along with 2.0 kg B ha-1 and the lowest was obtained in the control treatment. In tomato fruits the highest P (0.41%) was found in IAA40B2.0 treatment, while the lowest P (0.18%) was recorded in IAA0B0.0. The lowest B (4.55µgg-1) was recorded in control, while the highest B (15.72µgg-1) was found in IAA20B2.0in tomato fruits. In tomato plants the highest P (0.34%) was recorded in IAA60B1.5 and the lowest P (0.20%) was found in control. The lowest B (4.15µgg-1) was recorded in IAA0B0.0, while the highest B(13.33µgg-1) was found in IAA40B2.0 in tomato plants. The overall results suggest that treatment IAA60B2.0 was the best from other treatments.

Productivity and quality of bagging fruit of hybrid tomatoes

Tomato cultivation is challenging due to the high susceptibility to various pests and diseases. Fruit borer insects make fruits unfeasible for commercialization because this favors colonization by pathogens. The loss due to borers can be avoided by bagging the bunches of fruit, helping the conventional crop to be more sustainable, reduce the use of pesticides, reduce the residue in fruits and improve the quality of life of rural workers, by less exposure to agrochemicals and poisoning problems. The results are products of better quality and with the possibility of better profitability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of tomato bagging in the control of fruit borer insects, and its effects on lycopene content, taste, productivity and profitability. The experiment was conducted in a field in the municipality of Uberaba-MG, from November 2016 to September 2017. The experimental design was a randomized block design, in a 3 x 5 factorial, with four replications. The factors consisted of three tomato hybrids: Dominador (salad), Ravena (Italian) and Carina Star (Santa Cruz), and fruit bagging types, made by TNW (tissue-non-woven), tulle, organza, brown craft and a control, without fruit bagging. The decision of bagging use depends on the pest incidence in the area and the change in the agronomic characteristics of the tomato. The organza and tulle fruits bagging reduce the incidence of borer insects, relative to the control, in the cultivation in spring-summer. The Dominador presents higher brix content among the evaluated hybrids. Carina Star, when bagged with organza, produces fruits with higher levels of lycopene, and is 116% superior to the other cultivars. From the second harvest, organza fabric is the most profitable bagging, since it is the only one that can be reused several times and is therefore more sustainable.
