Rock magnetic property and paleointensity determination on historical Santorini lava flows

Abstract: [1] Eight historical dacitic lava flows from Santorini with ages between 46 A.D. and 1950 A.D. (four of them within the past century) have been subjected to detailed rock magnetic analyses and various experiments of absolute paleointensity. Thermomagnetic measurements and acquisition of isothermal magnetization have revealed the presence of two physically distinct magnetic phases with Curie temperatures of 280°C and 500°C. In most of the samples, the second phase does not play a prominent role for the charact… Show more

“…The sampling of materials that acquired a TRM in a recent, known field as a first step in understanding the ancient record has a long history in paleointensity studies [e.g. Coe and Gromme , 1973; Cottrell and Tarduno , 1999; Genevey and Gallet , 2002; Spassov et al , 2010; Morales et al , 2011].…”

“…The above described selection criteria are widely used in paleointensity studies, but it is also common to specify additional, but unquantified selection criteria. One such example is Arai plot curvature, which is often visually assessed [e.g., Spassov et al ., ; Calvo‐Rathert et al ., ; Neukirch et al ., ]. Recently, Paterson [] proposed a statistic to quantify Arai plot curvature true(true|ktrue→true|true) as produced by MD grains.…”

“…7; all data were reduced to the latitude of Thessaloniki, 40.65°N). The data are mainly ($85%) from Bulgaria (Kovacheva et al, 2014) but also from Greece and Southern Italy (Evans, 1986;Aitken et al, 1988Aitken et al, , 1989Tema et al, 2009;Spassov et al, 2010;Spatharas et al, 2010;Kondopoulou et al, 2014). The NRMS of 2.40 ± 1.60 indicates that the model could not fit a significant number of data with their a priori errors.…”
