The evolving explosion in high data rate services and applications will soon require the use of untapped, abundant unregulated spectrum of the visible light for communications to adequately meet the demands of the fifth-generation (5G) mobile technologies. Radio-frequency (RF) networks are proving to be scarce to cover the escalation in data rate services. Visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as a great potential solution, either in replacement of, or complement to, existing RF networks, to support the projected traffic demands. Despite of the prolific advantages of VLC networks, VLC faces many challenges that must be resolved in the near future to achieve a full standardization and to be integrated to future wireless systems.Here, we review the new, emerging research in the field of VLC networks and lay out the challenges, technological solutions, and future work predictions. Specifically, we first review the VLC channel capacity derivation, discuss the performance metrics and the associated variables; the optimization of VLC networks are also discussed, including resources and power allocation techniques, user-to-access point (AP) association and APs-toclustered-users-association, APs coordination techniques, nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) VLC networks, simultaneous energy harvesting and information transmission using the visible light, and the security issue in VLC networks. Finally, we propose several open research problems to optimize the various VLC networks by maximizing either the sum rate, fairness, energy efficiency, secrecy rate, or harvested energy.

The security in visible-light communication (VLC) networks has recently gained attention. This work presents a hyperchaotic baseband frequency hopping method based on optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (Hyperchaos-BB-FH-OOFDM) that can enhance both confidentiality and availability in VLC networks. A four-dimensional hyperchaotic scheme is employed for chaotic mapping. The proposed method exploits the random feature of the input data and chaotic codes to improve the confidentiality against correlation and statistical attacks and to improve the availability against illumination, disguised, and noise jamming. Using the chaotic scheme, the bipolar real OFDM samples are exploited to create dynamic cypher keys and spreading codes that are updated at each frame throughout the entire session, leading to high security against malicious attacks. The proposed method employs a four-fold encryption approach that involves chaotic frequency/time-domain scrambling of OFDM subcarriers, chaotic phase scrambling of frequency-domain subcarriers, and chaotic spreading of the OFDM signals upon transmission. According to the results, in addition to enhancing the confidentiality and availability, the method supports multiplexing, reduces the peak-to-average-power ratio of the OFDM signal, and improves the bit error rate performance for OFDM-based VLC networks.

This paper introduces an optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based hyperchaotic key generation encryption approach that can improve confidentiality in visible light communication (VLC) networks. Using a hyperchaotic four-dimensional method, the bipolar real-valued OFDM signal can be used for constructing dynamic cypher keys modified at every frame over the communication time, resulting in a superior degree of protection against statistical and correlation attacks. In accordance with our findings, this approach decreases the ratio of peak-to-average power of the transmitted signal, and enhances the bit error rate efficiency and secrecy capacity of the OFDM-based VLC network, which improves confidentiality.
