Robust and cost-effective silver dendritic nanostructures for SERS-based trace detection of RDX and ammonium nitrate

Abstract: We report the fabrication and performance evaluation of cost-effective, reproducible silver nanodendrite (AgND) substrates, possessing high-density trunks and branches, achieved by a simple electroless etching and used for the trace detection of RDX and Ammonium Nitrate.

“…Later, small area Raman mapping was also performed within an area of 20 × 20 μm 2 with a spacing of ∼1.5 μm by collecting nearly 200 spectra. The SERS intensities across the mapping area are represented using color maps for Raman modes of CV 918 cm −1 corresponding to ring skeletal vibrations ( Vendamani et al., 2020 ). The color scale indicates the intensity counts for each mode.…”

“…Silver nano-dendrites are synthesized by adopting low-cost, simple methodological electroless-etching; the details of which are described in one of our earlier reports ( Vendamani et al., 2020 ). In brief, a three″ Si wafer has been cleaned with acetone and diluted HF to remove chemical residues and native oxide, respectively.…”

“…In addition to the sensitivity, the signal reproducibility of a SERS substrate is extensively crucial for reliable detection of trace analytes in practice, especially for quantitative analysis. In this regard, plenty of pioneered studies have also been conducted and have drawn enlightening suggestions, such as employing plasmonic materials with high chemical stability [ 26 ], fabricating nanostructures with well-defined geometry [ 27 , 28 , 29 ], and improving the uniformity of the entire substrates [ 30 ]. Accordingly, mass-produced Au hierarchical nanoarchitectures commonly show great advantages as basic sensitive units for reproducible detection in the SERS field.…”

“…Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an ultrasensitive analytical non-destructive technique with extra-high detection capability, down to the single-molecule level [1]. Raman spectra contain information about vibrational modes of a molecule and are unique for each particular molecule, similar to fingerprints, which makes it possible to identify the specific molecules and chemical bonds in studied material.…”
