Robotic atrial septal defect closure

Abstract: Atrial septal defect (ASD) is one of the most common congenital cardiac diseases. This pathology can be treated with percutaneous devices. However, some of the ASDs are not suitable for device closure. Also, there may be device-related late complications of transcatheter ASD closure. Currently, robotic surgical techniques allow surgeons to close ASDs in a totally endoscopic fashion with a high success rate and a low complication rate. This study demonstrates the basic concepts and technique of robotic ASD clos… Show more

“…The first robotic ASD closure series was published in the early 2000s 7–9,11 . In recent years, robotic‐assisted cardiac surgery has been performed safely and effectively in all types of ASD 7–11,13 . The fact that it is applied in all types of ASD provides superiority to the transcatheter closure method 7,11,13 .…”

“…Robotic surgery has become a reasonable and safe alternative to conventional sternotomy and all minimal invasive incisions for ASD closure 7–13 . It provides low mortality and morbidity, high patient comfort, and rapid return to normal life 7–12 . Very small skin incisions in robotic surgery give the patient a superior advantage in cosmetic terms and psychological adaptation after the operation 12 .…”

“…Standart median sternotomi, lateral torakotomi, anterior torakotomi ve parsiyel sternotomi uygulanan tekniklerdendir. Günümüzde minimal invaziv cerrahi yaklaşımların önem kazanmasıyla video destekli mini torakotomi, robotik cerrahi gibi tamamen torakoskopik metotlar da uygulanmaktadır (7,8). Bunların dışında uygun vakalarda perkütan yaklaşımlar da tercih edilmektedir.…”

“…Since then, the use of robotic systems for minimally invasive surgery has become increasingly popular in Europe [2]. Currently, robotic ASD closure is a feasible and safe technique with a high success and low complication rate [2], [3]. Robotic cardiac surgery-related complications include cardiac arrest, atrial fibrillation, bleeding, renal failure, and vascular complications [5].…”
