Robotic-Assisted Proctectomy for Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Case-Matched Comparison of Laparoscopic and Robotic Technique

Abstract: Robotic proctectomy is a safe and effective technique for patients with IBD. It is comparable to LP with regard to perioperative outcomes, complications, and short-term functional results.

“…Nevertheless, there are scant data on the role of the robotic platform in the UC or FAP, with the exception of occasional case reports and small descriptive series [17][18][19]. A characteristic feature of these diseases is the young age at presentation.…”

“…The authors demonstrated that this technique was feasible and safe. In a more recent case-matched study, Miller et al [19] compared robotic and laparoscopic proctectomy among patients with UC who underwent prior laparoscopic total abdominal colectomy. The authors showed that the benefits of the robotic approach in this setting included avoidance of complications related to major laparotomy and a postoperative course similar to that of conventional laparoscopy with regard to perioperative outcomes, complications, and shortterm outcomes.…”

“…Disadvantages of RPS include con ict between the operative instruments, and the scope and the smaller degree of instrument triangulation compared to those of conventional laparoscopic surgery. However, SILS and robotic surgery techniques have been reported as having positive effects on patient satisfaction, cosmesis and body image [16][17][18] .…”

“…Literature published so far has shown feasibility of the robotic approach for performance of proctectomy in patients with rectal cancer. In 2012 Miller et al [45] published their short term results of robotic vs laparoscopic surgery for patients with IBD. In a casematched study design they analyzed 17 robotic proctectomies following laparoscopic total abdominal colectomy.…”
