Robotic-Assisted Microsurgery and Its Future in Plastic Surgery

Abstract: Within the last 20 years, robotic-assisted surgeries have been implemented as routine procedures in many surgical fields, except in plastic surgery. Although several case series report promising results, technical and economic aspects have prevented its translation into clinical routine. This review is based on a PubMed and Google Scholar database search, including case reports, case series, clinical and preclinical trials, as well as patents. Past, recent approaches, ongoing patents, as well as eight specific… Show more

“…As this system is operated by a telemetric control, the combination with an exoscope or robotic microscope potentially offers improved ergonomics for the microsurgeon. 13 Training with devices for robotic assistance is essential to draw conclusions about their potential clinical utility in microsurgical applications. Therefore, this study describes the training of experienced microsurgeons and complete novices in microsurgery and their respective learning curves using such a combination of a robotic microsurgical system with an exoscope.…”

“…4,5 The field of plastic surgery, however, has taken more time to integrate robotic-assisted surgery into routine procedures. [6][7][8] Robotic-assisted surgery has gained popularity in oncologic and reconstructive breast surgery, with the development of robotic-assisted procedures such as nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM), latissimus dorsi muscle flap harvest, deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction, and microsurgery with arterial and venous anastomosis being done with robotic assistance routinely. 2 With the advancements in the field of robotic plastic surgery, it will soon be possible for patients to undergo an extirpative breast surgery with immediate reconstruction utilizing robotic assistance.…”
