Road trauma prevention: Perspectives

Abstract: Road trauma is a major public health problem in all motorized societies. Doctors who treat casualties must commit themselves not only to providing optimum care but to becoming equally involved in the epidemiological and sociological aspects of road trauma prevention. The prevention of trauma requires a threefold approach: prevent the crash, prevent injury in the crash, and prevent injury aggravation after the crash. Strategies and program options to implement them have been formulated to reduce traffic injury.… Show more

“…By reducing exposure to risk, preventing road traffic crashes from occurring, reducing the severity of injury in the event of a crash and reducing the consequences of injury through improved post-collision care, Haddon thought to decrease the disease burden of pedestrian collisions. While evidence from highly motorized countries shows that Haddon's integrated approach to road safety produces a marked decline in road deaths and serious injuries, 35,36 the practical realization of this systems approach remains the most important challenge for road-safety policy makers and professionals.…”

“…Worldwide, road traffic crashes cause severe injuries and a large number of deaths each year, 1 " 3 and therefore, are regarded as a substantial public health problem. 4 In 1998, within the European Union, about 44, 000 persons were killed and 1.7 million were injured in traffic, but there are differences in the data obtained from the individual member nations. 5 Although Sweden boasts a high degree of road safety, about 60 persons per million population are killed in traffic annually, and 400 are severely injured.…”
