Road Surface Quality Assessment Using Polarimetric Airborne SAR

Abstract: Since the road infrastructure is an important factor for the economy and safety, the continuous monitoring of the road condition is a necessity. Compared to the widely used costly, time consuming and labour-intensive road condition monitoring using measurement vehicles all over the country, the potential of SAR polarimetry to remotely monitor the road surface roughness, cracks and potholes are investigated in this study. The polarimetric analysis of fully polarimetric X-band radar datasets acquired over the Ka… Show more

“…Unfortunately, no GT data are available for the secondary test sites. Therefore, the surface roughness results obtained from these test sites can only be compared to the results obtained from the surface roughness estimation models investigated in previous work [5], [24], [27].…”

“…Another common method to gain information about surfaces, especially if they should be very accurate, is using a synthetic aperture radar (SAR). However, past work using SAR on road characterization concentrate on road condition, like Babu and Baumgartner (2020), who monitor mainly road damage. The recorded inhomogeneities are of higher order than for this work.…”
