“…There are indeed various means of tactical peacebuilding and strategic conflict transformation that can be used as a medium of combating extremism, including the legal-justice approach, cultural and persuasive approach, education and learning and dialogue, among many others (see e.g. Gopin, 2000;Lederach, 1996;Philpott, 2012;Schirch, 2004;Butler, 2009). “…Now, one of the main challenges of scholars, practitioners or policymakers of conflict and peace studies is how to explain the role or the power of culture (which includes adat or customary laws, local institutions, traditions and practices) and religion (which includes texts, beliefs, doctrines, norms, identities, organisations or networks) in conflict, violence and postviolence settings whether for instigating/ building violence or supporting/building peace without trying to essentialise it. Some peace scholars and conflict resolution specialists, such as Schirch (2005), Butler (2009) and Philpott (2012), have indeed tried to avoid a black-and-white mindset and then engaged in a 'grey area' by reconciling and combining multiple approaches for peacebuilding and conflict resolution without essentialising, favouring or differentiating a particular model from (or over) the other. They tend to be realistic or pragmatic, meaning that any tactical peacebuilding/conflict resolution approach-liberal or 'non-liberal' model-might be useful, effective and strategic in a particular society and therefore could be implemented or used as a medium to resolve conflict and build peace.…”

“…Our analysis of just peace is rooted in both strategic peacebuilding approaches (Lederach & Appleby, 2010; Philpott, 2010; Schirch, 2004; Wählisch, 2019) and the intersubjective approaches (Aggestam & Björkdahl, 2013; Allan & Keller, 2006, 2008; Persson, 2014; Stahn & Iverson, 2020). Strategic peacebuilding approaches presuppose engagement among a wide array of actors from many sectors of society.…”
