Risks affecting hybrid rice yield in Bangladesh: two-tier approach of appraisal and management

Abstract: Purpose: Bangladesh faces a growing food demand from a growing population under the continuous shrinking of arable land. Most Bangladeshi farmers produce inbred rice. Hybrid rice has been shown, in China, to be far more productive per hectare. Bangladesh cannot feed itself long-term without ample produce of hybrid rice. Yet, fewer Bangladeshi farmers are growing hybrid rice at present; they perceive hybrid rice cultivation as too risky. The present study was conducted to define the yield risks of hybrid rice a… Show more

“…Out of Ten selected attributes of the learners, only one characteristic such as family member, showed positive significance at 0.05 level relationship with their attitude towards the BAgEd distance education program. Pervez et al also described similar findings [13]. Here six of the characteristics such as earning member, training, organizational participation, cosmopoliteness, uses of e-resources and creativity with dabble stars (**) correlation is significant and three independent variables such as academic semester, age and educational qualification with one star (*) correlation is significant.…”

“…Rice farming is a business that has many risks (Kabir et al, 2021). Human resources, production inputs, and natural factors can contribute to production risk (Pervez et al, 2022). Production fluctuations are caused by production risks in the agricultural sector (Arifin et al, 2021a).…”

“…The 0.7 million hectares land were cultivated hybrid rice during Boro season in 2016-17 which has contributed 3-4 million tons of additional rice to the total rice production of the country (AIS, 2018). Although there are few risks of hybrid production in Bangladesh (Kanak Pervez et al, 2022), in the meantime by adopting new technology, more than a dozen of hybrid rice varieties have been developed (Rahman et al, 2019;Rabbi et al, 2020). For the time being, effective seed production infrastructure is developed in the government, private, or NGO sectors in Bangladesh those are closely linked with hybrid rice research to accelerate the higher yield production.…”
