Risk of Incident Dementia in Drug-Untreated Arterial Hypertension: A Population-Based Study

Abstract: Arterial hypertension in midlife may increase the risk of late-life dementia. Notably, there is conflicting data as to whether hypertension in the elderly (age 65 years and older) is a risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD). We determined whether drug-untreated hypertension was associated with a higher risk of incident dementia and AD. In a population-based study of older people in central Spain (NEDICES), non-demented participants were followed prospectively. Dementia at follow-up was diagnosed… Show more

“…More specifically, the 37-MMSE was adopted to Chilean, Maltese and Spanish socio-cultural backgrounds and then validated against clinical diagnoses of dementia. The 37-MMSE included all of the standard MMSE items as well as three additional items: (1) an attention task, i.e., say 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 backwards, (2) a visual order, i.e., a man raising his arms, and (3) a simple construction task, i.e., copying two overlapping circles [15,16,[34][35][36][37][38]]. …”

“…177 As demonstrated by a recent meta-analysis hypertension is associated with an increased risk of incident VaD (OR=1.59; 1.29-1.95) 87 whereas the relationship is less clear for AD. 92,93,94 Among subjects not taking antihypertensive medication in the Honolulu Asia Aging Study (HAAS) 27% of late-life dementia cases were attributable to midlife SBP levels >120mmHg. 98 Despite conclusive evidence for the role of hypertension there is considerable uncertainty regarding the efficacy of antihypertensive treatment for lowering the risk of dementia: Observational studies: Published data suggest some preventive effect of antihypertensive treatment when given to younger people.…”
