Risk of Cause‐Specific Death in Individuals with Cancer—Modifying Role Diabetes, Statins and Metformin

Abstract: Both diabetes mellitus (DM) and cancer are common diseases and they frequently occur in the same patients. We investigated the all-cause and cause-specific mortality dynamics in relation to baseline DM, statin use and metformin use. The study population consisted of 39,900 incident cancer cases from Finland, 19,822 patients were free of DM at the start of follow-up and 20,078 had DM. Mortality from all causes, and cancer, cardiovascular (CVD) and other causes was analysed using Poisson regression model with th… Show more

“…Metformin is used not only to treat diabetes but also pre-diabetes in order to prevent diabetes [2023]. Metformin decreases insulin-resistance and body weight and prevents diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease [21,22,114119]. It is expected that metformin would extend life and, in fact, metformin does decrease all-cause mortality [119,120].…”

“…There is growing interest in chronically used medications that may influence the risk for and the progression of cancer. 11,12 Some medications such as aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) have been reported to decrease BC risk 13 or BC recurrence (statins, 14 NSAIDs, 15 beta-blockers (BB) 16 and metformin 17,18 ). So far, the impact of chronic comedications on immune infiltration has not been investigated.…”

“…In addition to that, statins have some pleiotropic effects [ 13 ]. Many studies have linked statins use with a reduction of both incidence and progression of many cancers, including breast [ 14 , 15 ], prostate [ 16 , 17 ] and CRC [ 18 , 19 ] as well. Some evidence, however, shows neutral effect of statins on those cancers.…”
