Risk Mitigation in Supply Chain Digitization: System Modularity and Information Technology Governance

Abstract: Firms face significant risk when they adopt digital supply chain systems to transact and coordinate with their partners. Drawn upon modular systems theory, this study proposes that system modularity mitigates the risk of adopting digital supply chain systems and therefore motivates firms to digitize more of their supply chain operations. The study theorizes how the risk-mitigating effect of system modularity can be enhanced by the allocation of decision rights to the IT (information technology) unit. The main … Show more

“…Therefore, digitalization is one of the important elements of supply chain. However, firms experience important risk when they implement digital supply chain arrangements to manage the collaboration with their partners (Xue et al, 2013). Generally, digitalization is based on electronic commerce (Chaudhuri & Mukhopadhyay, 2014;Nauwelaerts & Chakri, 2016;Tanoos, 2017;Chowdhury et al, 2018) which is expensive to develop.…”

“…By and large, their efforts were originally focused on effects of digitizing internal organizational processes (e.g., Fichman 2004;Swanson 1994). More recently, there has been an expansion to identifying and articulating unique aspects of digitization in industries, specific organizational domains, or product families (e.g., Agrawal et al 2013;Anderson and Agarwal 2011;Greenstein et al 2013;Xue et al 2013). They have especially highlighted the paradoxes and dilemmas that digitization creates for organizations developing, deploying, and managing digital innovation (e.g., Breshnahan and Greenstein 2014; Kallinikos et al 2013;Lyytinen et al 2016;Nambisan 2013;Tilson et al 2010;Tiwana et al 2010;Yoo et al 2010).…”

“…Firms may also resort to economic mechanisms, such as cyberinsurance, risk pooling arrangements, and managed security services, to manage information security risks [70,71]. Analyzing and evaluating security risk [55,68], leveraging system modularity [64], implementing and increasing user awareness of security countermeasures [20,36], and optimizing security investment [8,29,58] are critical procedures for effective information systems security management.…”
