Risk Identification and Prediction of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis in Kailuan Colliery Group in China: A Historical Cohort Study

Abstract: BackgroundPrior to 1970, coal mining technology and prevention measures in China were poor. Mechanized coal mining equipment and advanced protection measures were continuously installed in the mines after 1970. All these improvements may have resulted in a change in the incidence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP). Therefore, it is important to identify the characteristics of CWP today and trends for the incidence of CWP in the future.Methodology/Principal FindingsA total of 17,023 coal workers from the Kai… Show more

“…Coal industry is one of the national pillar industries in China and a large number of workers are involved in coal mining. It is reported that there were 4.7 million underground coal miners in 2010-2014 (1), who were exposed to a great deal of occupational hazards, including silica dust, coal dust, noise, vibration and heat, etc., which may lead to a various of occupational diseases such as pneumoconiosis, deafness, cardiovascular system disease and so on (2)(3)(4). Moreover, underground coal miners with…”

“…This paved the way to identify the characteristics of CWP trends today among coal workers. It is important to do a physical examination for coal workers who are at high risk for CWP to rule out pneumoconiosis every year and for those at low risk at least once in 5years (Shen et al, 2013).…”

“…Available: http://www.nhfpc.gov.cn/). During the past forty years in China, pneumoconiosis continued to occur even though prevention measures and work environment have been greatly improved . Although occupational dust exposure is considered contributing the most, the incidence, disease progression as well as the degree of pneumoconiosis vary greatly among individuals with similar exposures, which indicates an important role for genetic factors in the fibrogenic susceptibility …”
