Background and Aim: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women. To date, regional differences in breast cancer risk factors have not been identified. The aim of our review was to gain a better understanding of the role of risk factors in women with breast cancer in Asia. Methods: We conducted a PubMed search on 15 March 2016, for journal articles published in English between 2011 and 2016, which reported data for human subjects in Asia with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Search terms included breast neoplasm, epidemiology, Asia, prevalence, incidence, risk and cost of illness. Studies of any design were included, except for review articles and meta-analyses, which were excluded to avoid duplication of data. No exclusions were made based on breast cancer treatment. We reported the results using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Results: A total of 776 abstracts were retrieved. After screening against the eligibility criteria, 562 abstracts were excluded. The remaining 214 abstracts, which were published between 2013 and 2015, were included in this review. Results were summarized and reported under three categories: incidence, prevalence or outcomes for breast cancer in Asia; modifiable risk factors; and non-modifiable risk factors. We found that the increased risk of breast cancer among participants from Asia was associated with older age, family history of breast cancer, early menarche, late menopause, high body mass index, being obese or overweight, exposure to tobacco smoke, and high dietary intake of fats or fatty foods. In contrast, intake of dietary fruits, vegetables, and plant-and soy-based products was associated with a decreased breast cancer risk. While based on limited data, when compared to women from the United States, women from Asia had a decreased risk of breast cancer. Conclusions: This review of 214 abstracts of studies in Asia, published between 2013 and 2015, confirmed the relevance of known non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors for women with breast cancer.

PurposeWe prospectively analyzed the correlation between fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and the risk of breast cancer in women; explored the independent risk factors for breast cancer in women, and compared the effect of FPG level on the risk of young and non-young breast cancer. Our study provides new evidence and ideas for research into breast cancer etiology in China, improves the accuracy of secondary prevention of breast cancer, and provides options for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients with diabetes.Materials and methodsThree cohorts of women participating in the first health examination of the Kailuan Group in 2006, 2008 and 2010 were assembled to conduct a descriptive analysis of the baseline data on FPG. The cumulative incidence of breast cancer in different groups over 13 years was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and groups were compared using the log-rank test. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze the association between FPG level and the risk of breast cancer.ResultsThe cumulative incidence of breast cancer increased in people with FPG higher than 5.29 mmol/L, but there was no significant difference in the effect of different levels of FPG on the risk of young breast cancer in the population. Different degrees of fasting glucose can affect the risk of non-young breast cancer in the population.ConclusionThe results of this study suggest that the risk of breast cancer can be reversed by early intervention to control levels of FPG. Regular monitoring of FPG may reduce the misdiagnosis rate of breast cancer in the population.

A proliferative marker, expressed as the percentage of cells in a cell cycle, has been developed and used as a discriminant of more aggressive malignant phenotypes in early breast cancer (BC). The marker is usually expressed by the immunohistochemical staining of the cell cycle antigen Ki-67. It has not, however, yet been definitely evaluated, due to methodological concerns, which specific Ki-67 cut-off provide the strongest prognostic information in resected BC. We conducted a meta-analysis to explore the prognostic value of different cut-off levels of Ki-67 in terms of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in early BC. The databases of PubMed, the ISI Web of Science, EMBASE, SCOPUS, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and CINHAL were used to identify the relevant literature. Data from studies reporting a hazard ratio (HR) and a 95 % confidence interval (CI) calculated as a multivariate analysis were pooled in a meta-analysis, with metaregression used to test for trends in predefined subgroups. All the statistical tests were 2-sided. Forty-one studies encompassing 64,196 BC patients were included in the analysis. Overall, n = 25 studies were available for the OS analysis. The pooled HR for high versus low Ki-67 was 1.57 (95 % CI 1.33-1.87, P < 0.00001). Twenty-nine studies were available for the DFS analysis. The pooled HR for high versus low Ki-67 was 1.50 (95 % CI 1.34-1.69, P < 0.00001). When a cut-off of Ki-67 staining ≥ 25 % was used, the pooled HR for OS was 2.05 (95 % CI 1.66-2.53, P < 0.00001), which was significantly different to studies where the cut-offs chosen were <25 %. In ER+ tumors, the HR for high versus low Ki-67 was similar and significant (HR = 1.51, 95 % CI 1.25-1.81, P < 0.0001). We conclude that Ki-67 has an independent prognostic value in terms of OS in BC patients. The Ki-67 threshold with the greatest prognostic significance is as yet unknown, but a cut-off >25 % is associated with a greater risk of death compared with lower expression rates.
