Risk factors for latex allergy in patients with spina bifida

Abstract: From our data we conclude that in order to minimize risk of severe systemic clinical reactions, all patients with spina bifida should be screened for their individual risk of latex allergy to plan preventive measures before operations. Main risk factors for latex allergy seem to be: more than five operations, atopic predisposition, history of clinical symptoms while inflating a balloon, and a sensitization with a CAP-class of > or = 4.

“…Six patients (8%) have had a severe life-threatening reaction to latex. As reported by others, the risk of becoming latex allergic increases as the number of surgical procedures increases [18, 19, 20]. Those study patients allergic to latex have had twice as many shunt revisions as those without a latex allergy.…”

“…On the other hand, sensitization to natural latex allergens indicating the risk of clinical relevant latex allergies can be investigated by determination of latex-specific IgE in sera. Serological determination of latex-specific IgE published so far indicated positive results in 37–56% of the patients with myelomeningoceles [4, 12, 13]. In our series, 5 out of 40 (12.5%) children, from whom a completed questionnaire was obtained, had a history of latex-related allergic reactions, while 9 out of 31 (29%) patients, in whom a serological screening was possible, showed elevated latex-specific IgE.…”

“…health care workers or children with spina bifida (SB) [1, 2]. In SB patients, the rate of latex sensitization is 29–72% [3, 4, 5, 6]. It still remains to be clarified whether repeated early exposure or possibly a genetic predisposition represents the major factor for sensitization [6].…”
