Risk factors for human immunodeficiency virus among blood donors in Cameroon: evidence for the design of an Africa‐specific donor history questionnaire

Abstract: We identified both typical and novel HIV risk factors among Cameroonian blood donors. An adapted DHQ and score that discriminate HIV-negative donors may be an inexpensive means of reducing transfusion-transmitted HIV through predonation screening.

“…Indeed, the challenge of getting safer blood units is not only in recruitment and retention of VNRBD but also in donor deferral as several blood services had not implemented a donor health questionnaire in 2012. High prevalences of TTI were still observed at some services in this survey may be related to a lack of optimal donor deferral based on questionnaires incorporating locally appropriate risk factors . This study therefore fills the gap in knowledge on blood safety indicators between 2012 and 2017.…”

“…Motivations and deterrents to blood donation include setting-specific social and cultural factors. 17,18 These factors may be poorly understood in LMIC, leading to inadequate design of the necessary research to promote donation, and sub-optimal donor recruitment and retention strategies. Country-level assessments useful for defining future research are beginning to appear in the peer-reviewed literature.…”

“…Participants emphasized that donor recruitment and donation processes that work well in HICs cannot simply be “transferred to” or “adopted by” LMICs. Motivations and deterrents to blood donation include setting‐specific social and cultural factors . These factors may be poorly understood in LMICs, leading to inadequate design of the necessary research to promote donation and suboptimal donor recruitment and retention strategies.…”

“…Another study was performed in Romania, in which the results indicated 17.5% contribution of women to blood donation [9]. Moreover, the results of studies conducted in Ethiopia (12.1%), Netherlands (18.7%), China (18.6%), Iraq (0.3%), Qatar (2.6%), Turkey (11%), and Cameroon (19.5%) have presented that women have a small contribution to blood donation [10111213141516]. Various reasons can justify this low participation rate of women.…”
