Background. The frequency of asthma increases in childhood and asthma is associated with risk factors varying across age groups. The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of asthma and its associated risk factors in the first six years of life.Methods. Within the scope of the Adana Pediatric Allergy and Risk Factor (ADAPAR) birth cohort study, 203 infants that had experienced at least one wheezing attack during the first year of life were followed for asthma development until the age of six years. Additionally, 223 infants that were followed within the scope of the same study and had no wheezing attacks in the first year of life were assigned to the control group.Results. At the end of the sixth year, 46 (22.7%) infants were diagnosed with asthma and the use of antibiotics of the mother during pregnancy (OR: 2.98), the presence of allergic diseases in the mother (OR: 4.70) and sibling (OR:2.11), the presence of atopy (OR:4.76), and recurrence of wheezing in the first age (OR:17.35) were identified as risk factors for asthma.Conclusions. The prevalence of asthma at six years of age was higher than that of other studies. Prevention of infections at an early age and during pregnancy can reduce the prevalence of asthma.

Introdução: A asma é considerada uma das doenças crônicas mais comuns da infância e possui enorme impacto na saúde mundial tanto em países desenvolvidos quanto em subdesenvolvidos. O Brasil apresenta uma das maiores taxas de prevalência de asma na América Latina e diferenças significativas quanto às suas regiões nacionais. Diante disso, observa-se um déficit de estudos regionalizados, visto que o território brasileiro é altamente diversificado quanto ao clima, condições socioeconômicas, estilo de vida e alimentação, fatores influentes no risco de desenvolvimento dessa doença respiratória. Objetivos: Comparar a prevalência da asma em cada região brasileira e descrever os fatores de risco mais frequentes associados ao desenvolvimento de asma. Métodos: Tratase de uma revisão sistemática de artigos publicados entre 2010 e 2020 na base de dados eletrônica PubMed. Utilizou-se os termos "asthma" AND "Isaac" AND "epidemiology" AND "brazil". Resultados/discussões: A prevalência de asma no Brasil variou de 10,1% a 31,2% nos anos de 2003 a 2017, tendo a Região Sul apresentado maiores porcentagens e discrepâncias em detrimento da Região Nordeste que apresentou menores números e menor variabilidade entre as cidades. Os fatores de risco mais observados foram: Rinite, atopia e exposição ao tabaco. Considerações finais: As prevalências de asma entre as regiões brasileiras variaram em grande parte delas. Este fato, associado aos diferentes fatores de risco observados nos diferentes territórios, corrobora para que as práticas de

Introduction: Bronchial asthma is a chronic respiratory illness of global importance. Recent reports depict the increasing prevalence of this disorder in urban areas. Methods: An observational study was designed with a sample size of 1163 children from grade 4 to grade 12, involving 8 randomly selected schools in 2015-2016. Modified International Study of Asthma and Allergy in Childhood [ISAAC] questionnaire in local language [Hindi version] was used for data collection. The data of assessed risk factors were collected and analysed. Results: Prevalence of asthma in the studied population was 2.8%. Multivariate analysis revealed a significant association of risk of asthma with use of firewood kitchener for cooking, keeping pet animals at home, high body mass index (BMI), absence of ventilator measures like chimney and aero-vent. Logistic regression analysis revealed use of firewood kitchener for cooking (odds ratio (OR) = 4.9, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.93-11.3), absence of smoke outlet (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.3-5.8) and keeping pet animals (OR 3.2, CI 1.6-6.8) at home were observed to be significantly associated with asthma. Conclusion: Prevalence of asthma in our cohort was significantly lesser than that of developed world. Household smoke was the most conspicuous risk factor contributory to childhood asthma in this part of world.
