Risk factors for abnormal postpartum glucose outcome in women with gestational diabetes mellitus diagnosed by modified The International Association of the Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups criteria

Abstract: Aim: To characterize postpartum glycemic outcome and related risk factors in women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) by modified The International Association of the Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) criteria. Methods: This is a cohort study of 583 patients with GDM diagnosed by modified IADPSG criteria for Chinese women from 2016 to 2017. According to their oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) results at 6-12 weeks postpartum, the subjects were categorized into normal glucose tolera… Show more

“…Pre-pregnancy obesity or overweight is closely related to neonatal blood sugar. Wang and Luo [20] reported that pre-pregnancy BMI ≥ 25 kg/m 2 was a risk factor for GDM and neonatal hypoglycemia. This study adopted the “Chinese Adult Overweight and Obesity Prevention and Control Guidelines” standard and regarded BMI ≥ 24 kg/m 2 as overweight.…”

“…After the widespread adoption of IADPSG criteria for the diagnosis of GDM, the incidences of postpartum preDM and DM reported in women with GDM have decreased mainly because of the lower thresholds in IADPSG criteria. Wang et al (26) found that the incidence of postpartum preDM and DM in women with GDM was 29.9% and 2.9% after using IADPSG criteria. We included patients diagnosed with GDM both in one-(27.6%) and two-step approaches (72.4%).…”

“…There is some evidence that glucose levels during pregnancy are predictive of prediabetes. 8, 9 Retnakaran et al 10 have shown that the risk of dysglycaemia at 12 weeks postpartum increases across the groups from normal Glucose Challenge Test (GCT) and Normal Glucose Tolerance (NGT), to abnormal GCT and NGT, to Gestational Impaired Glucose Tolerance (GIGT), to GDM. This has been supported by other studies.…”
