Risk Factors Associated with Injury and Mortality from Paediatric Low Speed Vehicle Incidents: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Objective. This study reviews modifiable risk factors associated with fatal and nonfatal injury from low-speed vehicle runover (LSVRO) incidents involving children aged 0–15 years. Data Sources. Electronic searches for child pedestrian and driveway injuries from the peer-reviewed literature and transport-related websites from 1955 to 2012. Study Selection. 41 studies met the study inclusion criteria. Data Extraction. A systematic narrative summary was conducted that included study design, methodology, risk fac… Show more

“…Improvements in car engineering have also reduced fatalities: structures better able to withstand forces of collisions; safety devices such as airbags, seatbelts, and infant car seats; and rear cameras to prevent driveway backovers. 68,69 In early childhood, pedestrian fatalities are more common than driver/passenger fatalities.…”

“…Despite the variety of available glucose-lowering agents, many patients do not attain or maintain adequate glycemic control, emphasizing the need for further therapeutic options 3,4. T2DM incidence is increasing not only in adults but also in youths,5 making it the most urgent public health issue in both developed and developing countries.…”

“…The precise pathogenesis is not completely understood, but several possible mechanisms have been proposed: immune-complex mediated kidney injuries, T-cell immune-regulatory abnormalities, renal and glomerular endothelial injury resulting from vasculitis and capillary leak, and an increased release of cytokines. 27,28 Kawasaki disease shock syndrome could be also suspected in this case, but the child had normal blood pressure values over the entire acute illness, and no signs of poor peripheral perfusion, so the requirements for concurrent KD shock syndrome proposed by Kanegaye et al in 2009 were not met. 29 The main objectives of KD are to control the systemic inflammatory response, to reduce the prevalence of coronary aneurysms and to prevent coronary thrombosis.…”
