Risk factors associated with calcinosis of juvenile dermatomyositis

Show more

“…It has been reported that patients with higher muscle-derived enzyme levels had a lower incidence of calcinosis, probably because of the more aggressive treatment regimen. 19 In contrast, Sallum et al 15 observed that patients with severe cases of JDM (eg, with cardiac involvement) receiving immunosuppressant therapy had a higher risk of developing calcinosis.…”

“…13,14 Skin calcification is frequently observed in dermatomyositis (Figs 4 and 5). According to Sallum et al, 15 calcinosis cutis can be found in 30% of adults and in up to 70% of children and adolescents with dermatomyositis. The disease itself is an inflammatory myopathy that is characterized by skin involvement and muscular weakness.…”

“…The delay in starting treatment and the severity of the disease are risk factors for the development of calcinosis. 20 Other relatively frequent lesions were cutaneous ulcers and vasculitides, which, in addition to being possible signs of the severity of the disease, are secondary infection areas. In fact, in the present study, a high prevalence of cellulitis and abscesses was observed, also contributing to increase morbidity and mortality.…”

“…Unlike adults with dermatomyositis, calcinosis is more common in JDM as it occurs in up to 70% of cases [1]. Although it may precede JDM diagnosis [2], its development was related to delayed diagnosis and treatment and chronicity of JDM [3].…”
