Risk‐based dependability approach to maintenance performance measurement

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe how a risk‐based dependability approach can be used to link maintenance performance measurement and management to overall objectives within an organization. Design/methodology/approach – The applied study approach is a case study at Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration). Qualitative data were collected through interviews, workshops and document studies, while quantitative data was collected through data bases. As a framework for analysis, interna… Show more

“…Our results support the idea of conceptualizing and operationalizing risk management within the framework of standard ISO (2018). The results of this study are consistent with theoretical arguments in the literature, which considers risk management as an important elementary form of performance measurement in maintenance (Söderholm and Norrbin, 2013). Thus, our results strengthen credence to the growing importance of integrating risk management into the asset management framework (Trindade et al, 2019).…”

“…The positive relationship between PMS and accountability has been illustrated in many studies (e.g. Arena & Arnaboldi, 2014;Rasid, Golshan, Ismail, & Ahmad, 2012;Söderholm & Norrbin, 2013;Woods, 2008). In fact, PMS is inseparable from RM.…”

“…Generally, dependability is defined as the property of a system that justifies one's reliance on it. This characteristic encompasses RAMS attributes including reliability, availability, maintainability and safety and dependability-based maintenance is demonstrated to be a guide for a well-informed maintenance decision system, which has become an active area of research to assess the efficiency of any operational system before planning tactical maintenance strategies (Hameed and Vatn, 2012;Söderholm and Norrbin, 2013;Söderholm and Norrbin, 2014).…”
