Risk Assessment of a Synthetic Pyrethroid, Bifenthrin on Pulses

Abstract: This work was undertaken to determine the pre-harvest interval of bifenthrin and to minimize its residues in pulses and thereby ensure consumer safety and avoid non-compliance in terms of residues violations in export market. Furthermore the residue dynamics in the soil under pulses was explored to assess the environmental safety. The residues of bifenthrin dissipated following first order kinetics. The residues in harvest time grains were below the maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.02 mg/kg applicable for Euro… Show more

“…The cotton growers mostly rely on synthetic insecticides to manage the sucking insect pests. The insecticide bifenthrin (Talstar) is a synthetic pyrethroid having contact and stomach toxicity (Mukherjee et al 2010). Previously, it has been reported that this insecticide is very effective against different insect pests in cotton, vegetables, fruits, and in public health for the control of mosquitoes (Reddy and Rao 2002;Gupta et al 2009).…”

“…This is plausible as pyrethroid insecticides are used in the preserving and storage of pulses and nuts (Arthur, 1994;Mukherjee et al, 2010).…”

“…PAH Phenantherene was found to be absent in all the samples as chromatogram of Phenantherene showed no similar to any of the vegetable, fruit, soil or wastewater sample. The environmental fate of a pesticide is chiefly dependent on chemical properties it possessed (Mukherjee et al, 2010).…”
