Scrub typhus is caused by an intracellular bacterium, Orientia tsutsugamushi. It causes a disseminated vasculitic and perivascular inflammatory lesions. These lead to significant vascular leakage and end-organ injury. Eschar is the site of inoculation. It is painless and non-pruritic. It is a useful indicator of the disease. We studied the scrub typhus children with eschar to describe its distribution. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study done in tertiary care hospital. Study was done with aim of studying the distribution of eschar. Patients included in study are: confirmed to have scrub typhus with a positive Scrub typhus IgM ELISA test and presence of eschar, Children less than 18 years. Data collected regarding clinical profile of cases and eschar distribution. RESULTS:Totally 52 cases with eschar were included in the study. Commonest site of eschar was axilla followed by groin. Other common sites of eschar included abdomen and chest. CONCLUSION: Detection of eschar helps clinically to distinguish scrub typhus from other febrile illness. Knowledge of common eschar sites would be useful for early clinical diagnosis of scrub typhus.

Animal mites transmissible to humans and associated zoonosisMites that affect animals (acariasis) can occasionally be transmitted to humans by incidental contact producing pruritus and dermatitis. Animals such as dogs, cats, mice, birds and reptiles. harbour several mite species. Hemophage mites and those that feed on lymph have the potential of transmitting important zoonotic agents (cuales??). The presence of lesions of unclear origin and a history of contact with pets or wild animals should alert towards the possibility of acariasis. Diagnosis is based on direct visualization of the mite,analysis of its morphology and obtaining information on the animal host. Awareness of these acarosis and the responsible care of pets and animals are the most relevant preventive measures.Key words: Mite, mite infestation, acariasis, zoonoses, scabies, sarcoptic mange, avian mite, rat mite. Introduccióniferentes especies de ácaros infestan a animales (acariasis) y algunos de ellos causan enfermedad en el hombre (acarosis). Los ácaros pertenecen al phylum Arthropoda, clase Arachnida y subclase Acari. Son de pequeño tamaño, alrededor de 0,2 a 0,4 mm, poseen tres pares de patas en su fase larval y cuatro en el estado de ninfa y adulto.Más de 30.000 especies han sido descritas en el mundo con numerosos géneros y especies, que pueden ser ectoparásitos y endoparásitos. Varios de estos ácaros tienen importancia médica, especialmente en medicina veterinaria 1,2 . Se distinguen de los arácnidos por la presencia de gnatosoma y la falta de división entre el abdomen y el cefalotórax. Algunos excavan la piel como Sarcoptes scabiei. Abandonan al hospedero una vez que se alimentan 1 . En el hombre producen una dermatitis con lesiones generalmente papulares, pruriginosas y en ocasiones con reacción alérgica, secundaria a la saliva que se deposita mientras se alimentan 3 . Los ácaros hematófagos o los que se alimentan de linfa, tienen el potencial de transmitir diversos agentes patógenos virales, bacterianos o parasitarios. Los ácaros de los alimentos y del polvo no son vectores de agentes zoonóticos 4,5 . Las diferentes especies de áca-ros zoonóticos y agentes transmitidos se detallan en las Tablas 1 y 2.La presente revisión tiene por objetivo contribuir al conocimiento de los principales ácaros de animales de D compañía y de otros animales, que se pueden transmitir al hombre en forma accidental. La importancia de algunos de ellos es que son transmisores de agentes infecciosos. El conocimiento de estos agentes permite su sospecha diagnóstica, al considerar los antecedentes epidemiológicos asociados y una toma de decisiones y tratamiento adecuados. A 9-yr-old boy presented with twelve days of highgrade intermittent fever with hepatosplenomegaly and a 0.5x0.5cm eschar over upper anterior abdominal wall (Fig. 1). Eschar preceded the fever with itch on the site and a papulovesicular lesion. This ruptured to form a dark brown to black crust over 2 days. Scrub typhus Elisa for IgM was positive. With oral doxycyclline his itch disappeared in 12 hrs and fever subsided in 36 hrs. On follow-up after 2 wk the eschar had resolved leaving a small scar.
