CYSTEINE-(CYSTINE-) TYROSINE PEPTIDES 423 2. It is shown that both the N-carbobenzyloxy derivatives and to a smaller but significant extent the free peptides are hydrolyzed by crystalline pepsin; the hydrolysis is more rapid at pH 4*0 than at pH .1*8. The bearing of these results on Bergmann's theory of the conditions determining peptic action is discussed. .3. The cysteine derivatives are more susceptible to peptic hydrolysis than the corresponding compounds containing cystine; this observation is considered in relation to the fact that pepsin attacks proteins more rapidly after denaturation which is-itself accompanied by the appearance of-SH groups.

We have now at last a final proof that ancurin pyrophosphate is the actual factor missing in the avitaniinous brain (Banga, Ochoa and Peters, 1839). It has taken long t o reach this.Always the pliysiology will take the longest. Thc fact is that chemistry and hiochcmistry have rushed ahead lately and we must not be disappointed if the true nutritional wet+ takes rather longer to do, bccause it involves physiology. Today we shall be discussing our subject from the dual aspccts of pure biochemistry and of nutrition.

A suitable method of fluorimetric determination of riboflavin was developed, and riboflavin in various poultry feeding stuffs was determined by its use.Riboflavin was determined in fodder plants, vegetable refuse and wild plants. The influence of seasonal changes and of different stages of growth on the riboflavin content in fodder plants was investigated. Summer-grown plants contain more riboflavin than those grown in the rainy winter season. The riboflavin content of the plants declines in the course of their growth.
