Rhodomollins A and B, two Diterpenoids with an Unprecedented Backbone from the Fruits of Rhododendron molle

Abstract: Two new grayanoids, rhodomollin A (1) and rhodomollin B (2), possessing an unprecedented D-homo grayanane carbon skeleton, were isolated from the fruits of Rhododendron molle. The structures of 1 and 2 were fully characterized using a combination of spectroscopic analyses and X-ray crystallography. Rhodomollin B (2) exhibited modest activity against influenza virus A/95-359, with an IC50 value of 19.24 μM.

“…Rhodomollin B ( 142 ) from Rhododendron molle fruits showed inhibitory activity of Influenza A95 / 359 virus with an IC 50 value of 19.24 μM ( Li et al, 2016 ). Trichoderma atroviride containing wickerols A and B (200-201) had anti-influenza virus H1N1 strain with IC 50 values 5.0 μg/ml and 0.07 μg/ml.…”

“…To date, only two literature articles describing chemical investigations of this plant have been published, and mostly considered the phenols and iridoids 16 , 17 . The previous work carried out by our group over the years led to the isolation of new active terpenoids from plants of the family Ericaceae 2 4 , 18 , 19 . Therefore, our research on this plant was mainly focused on the attractive terpenoids.…”

“…Rhododendron molle G. Don (Ericaceae) is a well-known medicinal plant for treating pain, rheumatism, and asthma, as well as bruises, and its flowers, fruits, and roots have been proven to be a rich source of grayanane and related diterpenoids . However, phytochemical investigations on the leaves of R. molle are rare, and only a rhodomollane, three 2,3:5,6-di- seco -grayanane, and related grayanane diterpenoids were recently reported by our group .…”
