Rhodamine 6G Intercalated Montmorillonite Nanopigments-Polyethylene Composites: Facile Synthesis and UltravioletStability Study

Abstract: Bright red pigments, based on montmorillonite (MM) intercalated with rhodamine 6G (R6G) have been developed for the purpose of pigmenting polyethylene‐based polymers. The cationic dye R6G was intercalated into NH4+‐saturated MM in a slightly acidic medium. The resultant inorganic–organic MM complex was characterized using X‐ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, diffused reflectance, and color measurements. Expansion in basal spacing from an initial 11.3 to ∼15.… Show more

“…Depending on the CEC and water content of the material, the scattering reflection (d 001 ) of montmorillonite clays is usually found in the range of 9.5-14.0 Å [13]. In order to avoid interference caused by adsorbed water, the samples used for this study were all dried at 80°C for 8 h in a vacuum oven.…”

“…G6 was prepared with the loading of 90% and 14% of CEC for NT (68 mg, 4.35 Â 10 À4 mol) and R6G (29.8 mg, 6.72 Â 10 À5 mol), respectively (NT/R6G ¼ 6.5 : 1 mol/mol). The amount of intercalated organic moieties was calculated from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data, according to Smitha et al 22 Specically, for the sample intercalated with both R6G and NT cations, the weight loss registered between 100 and 360 C was ascribed to TEMPO moieties, and the weight loss from 360 to 600 C was attributed to the R6G decomposition.…”

“…The minor reflection peaks around 2θ = 4.2° and 6.3° for P–C30B and 2θ = 5.0° for P-DCNP likely resulted from the presence of some collapsed or agglomerated layers. , The basal spacing is an important factor to justify the dispersion state of polymeric materials containing nanosheets; a larger expansion of d -spacing value means more compatibility for paint molecular chains to be inserted between clay layers. The expansion of d -spacing for polymers containing DCNP was reported to be less than 1 nm in other studies. The significant difference between the d -spacing expansion of the present research with other works may arise from the type and modification of the feeding clay.…”
