Rheological, Mechanical, and Thermal Properties of Silane Grafted Layered Double Hydroxide/Epoxy Composites

Abstract: Judicious surface design of a nanofiller is pertinent to exploit its reinforcing competency in polymer composites. Herein, sodium dodecyl sulfate intercalated layered double hydroxide (LDH) was functionalized using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), which was then dispersed in the epoxy matrix. The grafting of APTES on the LDH surface was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The robustness of the interface reflected the significant improvem… Show more

“…Hence, this data further confirm that the ZnAl‐LDH has a typical layered crystalline structure . In terms of the MLDH, the characteristic peaks are similar to ZnAl‐LDH in the XRD curves, which clearly indicates that KH550 is grafted to the ZnAl‐LDH surface and there is no intercalation between the nanosheets …”

“…As for MLDH, the peak at 3441 cm −1 is attributed to OH group, the peak at 1570 cm −1 is attributed to N–H stretching vibration, which is a characteristic group of KH550 . The SiOSi stretching peak (1052 cm −1 ), SiOC vibration peak (950 cm −1 ) and CSi vibration band (678 cm −1 ) are observed at the spectrum of MLDH …”

“…From the FT-IR spectrum of LDH-APTES, the new absorption peak at 1556 cm −1 corresponded to −NH 2 , and the absorption peaks at 1067 and 980 cm −1 were attributed to the symmetric stretching vibrations of Si−O−Si and the Si−O−M vibration, respectively, which sufficiently confirmed the grafting of APTES molecules on LDH due to the condensation reaction between Si−OH and −OH of LDH nanolayers. 29 Moreover, the peaks appeared at 1236 and 877 cm −1 of LDH-HCCP and LDH@ HA samples were correlated with the characteristic vibrations of PN and P−N in HCCP, respectively, and the peak at 605 cm −1 was attributed to the stretching vibration of P−Cl in HCCP. 37,53 However, there were new peaks at 1504 and 940 cm −1 in the FT-IR spectrum of LDH@HA, which originated from the CC stretching vibration of the benzene skeleton and the characteristic P−NH−Ph absorption, respectively.…”

“…In addition, the band appeared about at 1205 cm −1 was assigned to the stretching vibration peak of C─O─C of KH‐560 . It was worth noting that in the DOPO‐LDH spectrum, new diffraction peaks appear at 1060 cm ‐1 , which could be the Si─O─Si bond generated by the self‐crosslinking of the coupling agent, and the P─H stretch vibration peak of DOPO at 2436 cm −1 disappeared. As a result, it can be proved that silane coupling agent has occured self‐crosslinking reaction and DOPO has been grafted onto the LDH .…”
