RFID Based Security and Access Control System

Abstract: Abstract-This paper describes the design of RFID based security and access control system for use in hostels inside the Punjab University premises. The system combines RFID technology and biometrics to accomplish the required task. When the RFID reader installed at the entrance of hostel detects a number, the system captures the user image and scans the database for a match. If both the card and captured image belong to a registered user, access is granted; otherwise the system turns on the alarm and makes an… Show more

“…When the RFID reader installed at the entrance of hostel detects a number, the system captures the user image and scans the database for a match. If both the card and captured image belong to a registered user, access is granted; otherwise the system turns on the alarm and makes an emergency call to the security van through GSM modem [17]. A digital access control system has been installed to a protected area where none but people with authenticated credentials can enter.…”

“…Again, Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a remote innovation that can be utilized to evolve the entrance control system. This technology provides a revolutionary automation in various processes ranging from industrial sectors to home control [2][3]. In RFID technology, the identification of an object automatically consists of the object, location of the object or individual with a special identifier code contained with an RFID tag, which is somehow connected to or implanted in the target [4].…”

“…Punjab University has higher security measures in protecting female students at the hostels by restricting access to authorized users which include face recognition. If the system detects "access denied", an automatic emergency will call the local authority for security purposes (Farooq, Hasan, Amar, Hanif, & Asad, 2014). At the University of Northern Arizona, the student card is used to access classroom, pay for food and gain entry into the hostels (Beaver, 2016).…”
