Revisiting the adipocyte: a model for integration of cytokine signaling in the regulation of energy metabolism

Abstract: Adipose tissue constitutes an extremely active endocrine organ with a network of signaling pathways enabling the organism to adapt to a wide range of different metabolic challenges, such as starvation, stress, infection, and short periods of gross energy excess. The functional pleiotropism of adipose tissue relies on its ability to synthesize and release a huge variety of hormones, cytokines, complement and growth factors, extracellular matrix proteins, and vasoactive factors, collectively termed adipokines. O… Show more

“…Using GC-MS analysis, we determined the FA profile of triglycerides, as they represent 90% of adipose tissue lipids (42), in order to understand the FA-specific changes in response to a HFD regimen and two physical exercise models (VPA and ET). (19-21).…”

“…In our opinion, there is yet much to learn from WAT from the "basic" biochemical-metabolic point of view. We know much about its metabolic modulation by cytokines 71 and hormones [72][73][74][75] , and even its responses to oxidative stress 76 and hypoxia 77,78 , however, we know very little on the quantitative importance of Randall's glucose-fatty acid cycle, the classical Cori cycle and the interchange of glutamine and ornithine-arginine with the splanchnic bed. Consequently, we developed a tool, which can be used for that purpose, adapted, modified, and, we hope, improved to fulfill its function.…”
