Revisiting innovation practices in subsistence farming: the net effects of land management, pesticide, herbicide and fungicide practices on expected crop harvest in Ethiopia

Abstract: To settle inconsistent findings in the farming innovation and productivity nexus, this inquiry examines the land management practices of 7,625 households in rural Ethiopia. Specifically, the net effects of (1) improved seeds, (2) mixed cropping and (3) row planting on the use of (4) pesticides, (5) herbicides and (6) fungicides are assessed. Using a structural equation technique, the study probes how these six practices predict households' expected harvest. It is found that while improved seeds increase pestic… Show more

“…For this purpose, variance inflation factor (VIF) scores are calculated and presented in Table 2. All VIF values are considerably lower than the recommended 5 or 3.3 thresholds (Kock, 2015;Hair et al, 2019;Onjewu et al, 2021). For common method bias, using Harman's single-factor test (Fuller et al, 2016), a single factor extracted only 23.7% of the total variance, much lower than the 50% limit.…”

“…To ascertain the reliability and validity of the measures, composite reliability (CR), Cronbach's alpha ( α ), and average variance extracted (AVE) should be calculated (Onjewu, Jafari‐Sadeghi, and Hussain 2022). In the current analysis, there is only one latent construct (CEI) with two indicators for which these can be assessed at the accepted thresholds of 0.7 for CR (Purwanto and Sudargini 2021), 0.6 for α (Gallais et al 2017), and 0.5 AVE (Zaiţ and Bertea 2011).…”

“…Also, extant research argues the role of innovation management, technology, and the digital economy in emerging crowdfunding (e.g., Steigenberger, 2017;Niemand et al, 2018;Shahab et al, 2019). Furthermore, there has been an ongoing endeavour to investigate other dimensions of crowdfunding, such as its relationship with social capital, innovation management drivers (e.g., Agrawal, Catalini and Goldfarb, 2015;Onjewu et al, 2022;Vismara, 2016), the life cycle of start-ups (e.g., Hornuf and Schmitt, 2016;Paschen, 2017) and even crowdfunding as a tool for value-creation (e.g., Ahlers et al, 2015;Baumgardner et al, 2017).…”
