Revisiting estimates of municipal solid waste generation per capita and their reliability

Abstract: Per capita municipal solid waste (MSW) generation, a core indicator of environmental pressure, is a useful measure for evaluating the intensity of waste generation over time and comparing the intensities among cities or countries. We provide an overview of global data on MSW generation per capita at the national and local levels. Although the legal definition of MSW varies from country to country, we conceptualize MSW simply as the waste managed by or for municipalities as a public service. We note the current… Show more

“…could have also contributed to growing municipal waste as number of studies have shown positive correlation between the two (Aleluia & Ferrão, 2016;Kawai & Tasaki, 2016;Palanivel & Sulaiman, 2014;Senzige, Makinde, Njau, & Nkansah-Gyeke, 2014). Municipalities and community groups in Nepal are mainly characterized by having limited access to information, especially on improving waste management system and using waste in an economically productive way (Practical Action Nepal, 2008).…”

“…MSW definition ambiguity: According to the Mongolian Law on Waste Management (2012), there is no legal definition of MSW, as is the case for some countries that do not use the term "municipal solid waste" or "MSW" in their native languages [22]. This hinders the amount of MSW generation, as there are various waste categories coming from different sources.…”

“…Recyclable waste is informally recovered from the MSW stream and flow into the recyclable stream during each process [22] of discharge, collection, transportation and disposal. Therefore, there is an urgent need to address these uncertainties, which occur in solid waste management.…”
