Revision of Autolytinae (Syllidae: Polychaeta)

Abstract: Autolytinae is revised based on available types, and newly collected specimens. Out of 170 nominal species, 18 are considered as incertae sedis, 43 are regarded as junior synonyms, and 25 are referred to as nomina dubia. The relationships of Autolytinae is assessed from 51 morphological characters and 211 states for 76 ingroup-taxa, and 460 molecular characters from mitochondrial 16S rDNA and nuclear 18S rDNA for 31 ingroup-taxa; outgroups include 12 non-autolytine syllid polychaetes. Two analyses are provided… Show more

“…This species is very similar to Myrianida inermis Saint-Joseph, 1887, but according to the descriptions by Gidholm (1967), San Martín (2003) and Nygren (2004), M. inermis is longer and has a greater number of segments, its nuchal epaulettes reach chaetiger 5, the blades of its chaetae are longer and thinner than those of our specimen, and its pharynx is longer and more convoluted, with a poorly differentiated trepan. Trepan and part of the pharynx are not visible in our specimen.…”

“…Our species has no small glands present across each segment and the compound chaetae have no serration (see Cognetti, 1957;Nygren, 2004). In the absence of more specimens, we cannot identify the specimen at species level with certainty.…”

“…Type locality: Mediterranean (Gulf of Naples). As type material has been lost and the original description is insufficient, the taxon is considered of unclear generic affiliation (Nygren 2004) and all subsequent records must be considered questionable.…”

“…Finally, the individuals were identified by employing the most recent literature on the taxonomy of Mediterranean Syllidae (e.g. San Martín, 2003;Nygren, 2004).…”

“…The data were taxonomically updated according to the most recent literature (e.g. San Martín, 2003;Nygren, 2004;Ç inar & Gambi, 2005;San Martín et al, 2009). Species distribution data were compiled from the literature to construct the Mediterranean syllid inventory and the corresponding higher taxonomic classification (following ; species known to live exclusively on soft substrates have been excluded from this inventory.…”
