The well‐known Baraboo Interval quartzites in the Laurentian midcontinent are a succession of mature red siliciclastic strata, locally more than 1.5 km thick, and covering an area >300,000 km2, much if not all of which was deposited after the Mazatzal orogeny (<1.63 Ga), and before the Baraboo Orogeny (~1.47 Ga). Ca. 1,300 new LA‐ICPMS detrital zircon ages from six Baraboo Interval inliers in Wisconsin and the Sioux Quartzite in South Dakota, USA attest to significant distal provenances not previously recognized. The principal ~1.8–1.9 Ga and >2.5 Ga age peaks represent local, southern Superior province sediment source areas. Yet more than 30% of our dataset includes ages between 1.9 and 2.5 Ga which are essentially absent from the region. We interpret these non‐locally derived zircons to have been transported ~2,500 km southeast to the Columbian supercontinental margin. The subsequent accretion of the Mazatzal terrane caused a major drainage reorganization, and transport of sediment for the uppermost Baraboo interval strata was north rather than south‐directed.

Provenance studies demonstrate the important control of plate boundary mountain building on continental sediment routing systems. Less well understood is if subsidence and uplift in cratons also has the potential to affect the organization of sediment routing systems on continental scales. New detrital zircon provenance data from the Michigan Basin in the Midcontinent of North America preserve evidence of intrabasin provenance heterogeneity in Cambrian, Ordovician, and middle Devonian strata. These results suggest that cratonic basins serve as effective sediment barriers that prevent mixing within and across basins from 10 to 100 s of millions of years. Internal sediment mixing, sorting, and dispersal may be achieved by a combination of sedimentary processes and inherited low relief topography. These observations are consistent with provenance data sets from eastern Laurentian Midcontinent basins that show locally and regionally variable provenance signatures during the early Paleozoic. By the late Devonian, provenance signatures throughout the basins homogenized, consistent with the emergence of transcontinental sediment transport systems associated with Appalachian orogenesis at the plate margin. These results demonstrate the importance of cratonic basins on local and regional sediment routing systems suggesting that these features may impede the integration of continental-scale sediment routings systems, particularly during periods of plate margin quiescence.

An accretionary tectonic model for the Mesoproterozoic ca. 1500–1340 Ma tectonic evolution of the southern Laurentian margin is presented. The tectonic model incorporates key observations about the nature and timing of Mesoproterozoic deposition, magmatism, regional metamorphism, and deformation across the 5000-km-long southern Laurentian margin. This time period was one of transition in the supercontinent cycle and occurred between the breakup of Columbia and the formation of Rodinia, and the southern Laurentian margin was a significant component of a much greater accretionary margin extending into Baltica and Amazonia and possibly parts of Antarctica and Australia. However, fundamental questions and contradictions remain in our understanding of the tectonic evolution of Laurentia and paleogeography during this time interval.
