Abstract: Most eukaryotic genomes are characterized by excessively large amounts of non-coding DNA sequences among which redundant (repetitive) elements constitute a sizable portion. The functional role of an abundant subclass of repetitive sequences--simple, tandemly arranged repeats--remained mysterious so far.
