“…Despite clear concerns about climate breakdown viewed as an issue of a global emergency by two thirds of 1 million people surveyed from 50 countries, switching to plant-based dietary choices was not seen positively as the solution [ 48 ]. In a recent simulation study [ 49 ], Henchion et al reported the projected demand for animal-based protein until 2050 and noted that decreases in meat consumption in European and American regions were possible, should effective policies be implemented to support a more sustainable food system. However, the study reported that these decreases would be accompanied by increased consumption in African and South-East Asian regions, rendering little change to the global average [ 49 ].…”

“…The case of sustainable dairy is a sensitive one. On one hand, milk and dairy, along with meat and eggs, represent a prime source of superior protein, known for thousands of years, so it is natural to observe increasing trends in the consumption of these products while countries register economic and social development [16,28]; this also being the case of EU Central and Eastern countries, where GDP values increased compared to the EU average [29]. On the other hand, the intensive dairy farming industry is recognized by the high environmental impact and contribution to global warming, acidification, energy consumption and land occupation [30,31], which makes it unsustainable.…”

“…As incomes rise, plant proteins from grains, tubers, and legumes are progressively replaced by animal proteins from poultry, eggs, dairy, and red meat ( 3 – 5 ). Analyses of food balance sheets from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations point to the importance of meat, eggs, and dairy in assuring the optimal protein nutrition across the low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) ( 6 ). Protein nutrition is of concern to Indonesia, which was recently downgraded to a lower middle-income country status by the World Bank ( 7 ).…”
