Artificial recharge engineering has been widely used to solve the water resource crisis. However, there are still some safety hazards regarding reclaimed water quality. Here, chlorinated secondary effluent (SE) was injected into saturated porous media composed of high–purity quartz sands. The column experiment was conducted and modeled through a developed numerical model to predict the evolution of physical clogging. Some representative inorganic and organic indicators were measured both at different times and in different column sections. The study showed that the relative hydraulic conductivity (K/K0) decreased significantly by approximately 63.5% in 40 h. Especially for the first 3 cm of the column, the clogging was the most serious, with a decrease of approximately 85.8%. The porous media has a certain degree of filtration effect on turbidity, TOC, protein (Pr) and polysaccharide (PS) but has slight removal for other water quality indicators. Pr is the main component of the intercepted TOC, and its content is higher than that of Ps. Moreover, the inorganic and organic parameter variations along the column further verified that the organic floc particles were mainly retained in the first 3 cm. The 3D excitation/emission matrix (3DEEM) fluorescence spectra illustrated that the humic acids and fulvic acids were easy to release and that their injection may be harmful to groundwater quality. The study will lay a theoretical foundation and provide a guiding scheme for optimizing China’s reclaimed water reuse technology, ensuring the safety of reclaimed water quality.

Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms in natural, controlled marine and freshwater environments. The real-time monitoring of aquatic environmental parameters is very important in fish farming. Internet of things (IoT) can play a vital role in the real-time monitoring. This paper presents an IoT framework for the efficient monitoring and effective control of different aquatic environmental parameters related to the water. The proposed system is implemented as an embedded system using sensors and an Arduino. Different sensors including pH, temperature, and turbidity, ultrasonic are placed in cultivating pond water and each of them is connected to a common microcontroller board built on an Arduino Uno. The sensors read the data from the water and store it as a comma-separated values (CSV) file in an IoT cloud named ThingSpeak through the Arduino microcontroller. To validate the experiment, we collected data from 5 ponds of various sizes and environments. After experimental evaluation, it was observed among 5 ponds, only three ponds were perfect for fish farming, where these 3 ponds only satisfied the standard reference values of pH (6.5-8.5), temperature (16-24 °C), turbidity (below 10 ntu), conductivity (970-1825 μS/cm), and depth (1-4) meter. At the end of this paper, a complete hardware implementation of this proposed IoT framework for a real-time aquatic environment monitoring system is presented.

Many microorganisms are naturally occurring in both recharging water and porous media, and microorganisms will grow and clog the pores of porous media. Porous media show different clogging depth and rate, which depends on the carbon source concentration. The bioclogging depth limit and rate under the effect of the nutrient concentration can be disentangled through column experiments and numerical simulation approaches. We use the TOUGHREACT method‐based on the monod equation of microbial growth to explore the process of microbial growth and permeability change, and correct with experimental results. The experimental results show the influence of nutrient concentration (glucose) on microbial growth and clogging of porous medium, and leads to clogging of porous medium. The clogging rate was defined as the rate of change of hydraulic conductivity with time for quantitative study of bioclogging in our study. Simulated results found that the clogging rate increases 0.035 and 0.00673 (m/d/min) respectively in the glucose concentration range of 0.045–0.6 and 0.6–5 mmol/L, simultaneously, the ultimate clogging depth decreases 18.2 and 1.7 mm respectively in the glucose concentration range of 0.045–0.6 and 0.6–5 mmol/L. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of nutrient concentrations on bioclogging and shed light on the establishment of nutrient concentration standards for recharge water during groundwater artificial recharge.
