Productivity of medicinal and aromatic plants refers to their biomass and the target chemical constituents' quantity. A 2‐yr field study was laid out as a split‐plot to evaluate the effectiveness of the exogenous chitosan and fertilizer type on biomass, biochemical characteristics, and phenolic compounds of Thymus daenensis Celak. (denaian thyme, from the mint family). Mainplots consisted of fertilizer type, including synthetic fertilizer (Syn), cow manure (CM), vermicompost (VC), and a combined fertilizer. Foliar application of chitosan at three concentrations (0, 200, and 400 mg L–1) was allocated to subplots. Thyme responded differently, based on its stage of growth. In the establishing year, Syn, and 400 mg L–1 chitosan produced 2,047 kg ha–1dry matter. In the harvesting year, maximum biomass (2,853 kg ha–1) was obtained from the combined fertilizer and 400 mg L–1 chitosan. Accumulation of nutrients was in the order of K > N > P. The highest nutrient accumulation was obtained when combined fertilizer was used. Exogenous chitosan at the rate of 400 mg L–1 boosted nutrient density in leaves. Inboth growing seasons, all phenolic compounds were influenced by fertilizer and chitosan application. Cinnamic acid and rosmarrenic acid were the major phenolic compounds. In the establishment year, major and minor phenolic compounds were highest when CM was applied. Phenolic compounds reached their peak concentration in the harvest year in combined fertilizer treatment. The interactive effects of fertilizer and chitosan on phenolic compounds were minimal in both growing seasons. Combined organic and Syn and chitosan seemed an effective strategy to improve biomass yield, phenolic compounds, and nutrient density in thyme.

Antibacterial Effects of Thymus daenensis Celak Ethanolic Extract Against Food-borne Bacteria

T HYMUS daenensis is a native medicinal plant of Iran with high pharmacological effects. The present survey was performed to evaluate the antibacterial effects of T. daenensis extract toward Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa food-borne bacteria. Ethanolic extract of T. daenensis was prepared from plant's aerial parts. The diameters of the growth inhibition zones of bacteria against this extract and amoxicillin antibiotic disk was assessed by the disk diffusion test. Minimum inhibitory concentration was assessed using the broth micro-dilution method. The diameter of the growth inhibition zones of different concentrations of T. daenensis extract had the ranges between 7.00±0.54 to 15.00±1.09 mm. These findings revealed that the increase in the concentration of T. daenensis extract have caused significant increase in the diameter of the growth inhibition zone (P ≤0.05). Antibacterial effects of different concentrations of T. daenensis extract were lower than that of amoxicillin disk. T. daenensis extract had the highest antibacterial effects against P. aeruginosa. Additionally, T. daenensis extract had the highest antibacterial effects at lower concentrations (25 mg/mL) toward S. aureus. T. daenensis extract had the lowest MIC against S. aureus (6.00±1.00 mg/mL). The MIC of T. daenensis extract toward P. aeruginosa was 10.00±1.00 mg/mL. Antibacterial effects of T. daenensis ethanolic extract was determined in this survey. According to antibacterial effect of T. daenensis extract against food-borne bacteria, its application as a food preservative should potentially assess.

Curcuma aeruginosa is the common name of temu hitam in Indonesia, and the rhizome parts of the plant have several pharmacological activities. Generally, pharmacological activities are associated with bioactive content in the extract of medicinal plants. Several factors can in luence the bioactive extraction from medicinal plants such as solvent types, extraction time, extraction technique, and liquid-to-solid ratio. In this research, the extraction factors for extraction yield and cytotoxic activity of C. aeruginosa rhizome were optimized using the Box-Behnken experimental design. Effect of ethanol concentration, the ratio of liquid to solid, and extraction time for the maceration process was studied. The cytotoxic activity was determined by the brine shrimp lethality test. The optimum value that maximizes the extraction yield was 70% ethanol, 300:15 ml/g liquid to solid ratio, and 1-day extraction time. The optimum value that maximizes the cytotoxic activity was 70% ethanol, 150:15 ml/g liquid to solid ratio, and 2-day extraction time. The predicted extraction yield and cytotoxic activity at these projected values are 14.78% and 78.26 mg/l, respectively. In this model, Adeq Precision (10.35 and 4.16), R-Squared (0.86 and 0.79), and F-value (7.92 and 2.04) is rational to it the model for extraction yield and cytotoxic activity from C. aeruginosa rhizome.
