Review on Energetic Thermoplastic Elastomers (ETPEs) for Military Science

Abstract: Energetic thermoplastic elastomers (ETPE) are futuristic binders for propellant/explosive formulations. Various aspects of ETPEs are addressed in this review. Synthesis modes of different copolymers for ETPEs are discussed. Attention is also given to formulations and thermal studies of ETPE-based propellants and explosives. Processing methods and parameters of composition are included. As the cost and environmental concerns are prime factors of future generation propellants/explosives, the recovery and reproce… Show more

“…In recent years, much work has focused on the synthesis of poly(3,3-bisazidomethyl oxetane/3-azidome-thyl3-methyl oxetane) (P(BAMO/AMMO)), due to its good properties: proper heat formation, low glass transition temperature and low sensitivity to stimuli. PAMMO is usually obtained by the living cationic polymerization of AMMO, which is known for its very high mechanical sensitivity [30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37].…”

“…Energetic polyurethane and composite materials have been used as solid propellant binders in the past few decades (10)(11)(12). Composite solid rocket propellant is composed of metal fuel, solid oxidant, binder and other additives (13,14). The polyurethane binder can fix these solid components into ideal shape and complete structure.…”

“…The polyurethane binder can fix these solid components into ideal shape and complete structure. Its properties have an important impact on the final process properties, energy level and mechanical performance of the propellant (14)(15)(16). The introduction of the azide group into energetic polyurethane can increase the heat release and reduce the oxygen consumption and the molecular weight of decomposition products, so it has a high application potential (17).…”

“…Solid propellants comprise solid ingredients like oxidizers, metallic fuels, and other minor additives as processing aids dispersed throughout a binder matrix. 1 An important kind of oxidizers is nitramine solid ingredients like hexogen (RDX). Using the binders, the solid ingredients are to be bound together to form a composite grain with satisfactory mechanical properties.…”
