The present work aims at determining the potential of date palm wastes to be applied as reinforcement in polypropylene. For this, fibers were separated from the raw biomass via mechanical defibration in Sprout Waldron equipment. Then, three different treatment strategies were adopted on the fibers, being (i) mechanical, (ii) chemical with NaOH, and (iii) enzymatical with xylanases and pectinases. Fibers were characterized in terms of chemical composition, morphology and SEM. Additionally, PP was reinforced with date palm fibers and the composites’ stiffness was evaluated. The analysis was performed from a macro and micro mechanical viewpoint. The incorporation of 40 and 60 wt.% of DPF-E enhanced the Young’s modulus of PP by 205 and 308%, respectively. The potential of enzymatically treated fibers to replace glass fibers in composites was studied, exhibiting similar stiffening abilities at 60 wt.% of date palm fiber (6.48 GPa) and 40% of glass fibers (6.85 GPa). The intrinsic Young’s modulus of the fibers was set at values around 16, 20 and 24 GPa for mechanical, chemical and enzymatic fibers. From the micromechanical analysis, the efficiency of the reinforcement as well as the contribution of the length and orientation to the Young’s modulus of the composite was evaluated.

Astrocaryum chambira is an important palm tree employed for many people along the Amazonian region in handcrafts and other products, by traditional manipulation techniques. The aim of this study is to perform a physical and chemical characterization of A. chambira Burret (Tucum) fibers, comparing the obtained parameters with others from commonly employed textile fibers, and to perform the characterization of the handcrafted yarn manufactured by this traditional Amazonian community in Brazil. Reflections about the relation between this fiber and traditional communities were also made. Main characteristics were determined, namely: 90 ± 12 cm fiber length; 1.510 ± 0.007 g/cm 3 density; 10.0 ± 0.34% regain; 80.3% index of crystallinity; TGA; DTG and DSC profiles with estimated values of holocellulose (68.4%) and lignin (21.7%); and tensile tests resulting in: 37.4 ± 5.6 cN/Tex tenacity; 6.6 ± 0.4% elongation; 8.3 ± 1.0 N/Tex Young's Modulus. Siliceous bodies (phytoliths) are found along the longitudinal surfaces of A. chambira Burret fibers. The results obtained may be a database of A. chambira fibers, helping future research that will addresses its application potential as an alternative textile fiber.

Textile natural fibers production regarding the agroforestry approach

As sustainability is becoming an important topic for both agriculture and the textile sector, there is an increasing market demand for plant-based fibers production. Diversified farming systems, such as agroforestry, have received considerable attention for their potential to contribute to more environmentally sustainable and socially just agricultural methods, that offers a smart use of water and soil nutrition. They can be a direction for rural development through contributions in agrobiodiversity, livelihood diversity, labor availability and economic growth. They are currently being promoted in many regions to contribute for food security, climate change adaptation and mitigation. In this study, the research methodology was based on a systematic literature review and secondary data collection and analyses. The aim was to investigate initiatives towards sustainable textile fibers cropping, including different species and plantation methods. The results indicate few cases worldwide and suggest cotton as the main experimented specie, generally cultivated with two other ones. They were identify three methods applied in cotton crops: (1) crop rotation, (2) agroecological intercropping and (3) agroforestry. Results also demonstrates different production challenges, concerning machinery development to mixture crops, ideal species groups, economic viability and process scalability. Forest management methods that can sustain good mixes of tree species need to be designed, promoting rich agrobiodiversity landscapes. Thus, defining, measuring and rewarding good farming practices are the main possible drivers to motivate farmers to change to new approaches towards sustainability in textile fiber production. Further investigation is demanded to evaluate different species possibilities and cropping maintenance, as well as addressing public policies and coordinating stakeholders interests.
