For a long time, Iraq has been suffering from the environmental pollution and electricity crisis. Therefore, tidal energy is one of the best renewable sources should be used to solve together the environmental pollution and electricity crisis. Tidal energy is usually available in coastal areas. Southern of Iraq has coastal areas in Basra Governorate on the northern Arabian Gulf. Therefore, this study has been investigated the possibility of establishing tidal power stations in two locations in Basra, Um Qasr and Al-Faw. In the case of the construction of a 4km 2 tidal barrage in Um Qasr, the electricity generated was 98.85MW and 197.69MW to meet the demand for electricity in Basra by 6.59% and 13.18% in the case of one-way and two-way generation, respectively. While in case of construction of a 4km 2 tidal lagoon in Al-Faw, the electricity generated was 31.37MW and 62.73MW to meet the demand for electricity in Basra by 2.09% and 4.18% in the case of one-way and two way generation, respectively. So, this study clearly shows that tidal energy can contribute significantly to relief the electricity crisis in Basra Governorate.

Despite several wave energy converters (WECs) having been developed to present, no particular concept has emerged yet. The existing inventions vary significantly in terms of the operation principle and complexity of WECs. The tethered point absorbers (PAs) are among the most known devices that, thanks to their simplicity, appear to be cost-effective and reliable for offshore installation. These devices need to be advanced further and, therefore, new tailored modelling methods are required. Numerical modelling of this type of WEC has been done mainly in one degree of freedom. Existing methods for multi-degrees of freedom analysis lack pragmatism and accuracy. Nevertheless, modelling of multiple degrees of freedom is necessary for correct analysis of the device dynamic response, wave loads and device performance. Therefore, an innovative numerical method for two degrees of freedom analysis of PA WECs, which permits precisely modelling the dynamics of PA for surge and heave motions, is introduced in this paper. The new method allows assessing, in the time-domain, the dynamic response of tethered PAs using regular and irregular sea states. The novel numerical model is explained, proved and empirically validated.

Increasing the penetration of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics, wind turbines, and tidal lagoon power plants raises concerns regarding their impacts on the power systems. Although wind and solar power generation can reduce the peak load demand in distribution circuits, these renewable energy sources may cause voltage and protection issues including voltage regulation, flicker, short-circuit current contribution, and protection coordination. Additional equipment such as capacitor banks, voltage regulators, static var compensators (SVCs), static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs), and energy storage systems may be required to provide enhanced voltage regulation.The Special Issue "Inventions and Innovation in Integration of Renewable Energy Systems" has provided an insight into the different aspects of renewable energy integration. There are six papers published in this special issue as follows:The first paper [1] presents a framework for deploying energy storage (ES) systems to simultaneously provide stacked benefits for the distribution system. In this paper, ES is used to provide the N-1 contingency requirement as a primary application. During normal operating conditions, ES is used for multiple secondary applications, including voltage management and frequency regulation. The framework proposed in this paper is generic and can be easily adapted for other feeders, with a different set of primary and secondary application scenarios.The second paper [2] develops an integrated multi-time-scale simulation tool for analyzing the renewable energy integration in distribution circuits. The proposed tool includes three circuit equipment models for the simulations in three different time scales, which are steady-state, electromechanical transient, and electromagnetic transient models. The proposed tool can switch from one single-time-scale model to another single-time-scale model when the power system phenomena with different time scales occur. Therefore, this tool is useful for performing a long-term simulation involving the power system phenomena spreading across time scales.The third paper [3] proposes a technique to visualize the results obtained from the quasi-static time-series simulations of large distribution circuits. The proposed technique uses the probability density evolution to visualize the distribution of electrical variables, such as, voltages along distribution feeders and show the evolution of circuit variables over time. One of the applications of the proposed technique is to help visualize the behavior of new devices in the power systems.The fourth paper [4] describes the historical developments of tidal energy and presents the recent advances in tidal lagoon technology. The mechanism of tide generation and the principles of tidal lagoon operation are presented. In addition, the paper also provides the characteristics of tidal power generation and discusses the opportunities, challenges, and solutions for integrating tidal lagoon power plants into the UK power system.
