The rise of China has accelerated Renminbi (RMB) internationalization. While there seems to be global support for RMB internationalization, there is a gap in understanding how developing nations, facing potential domestic skepticism, rationalize and articulate their support. This article discusses narratives that states use to legitimize their support for RMB internationalization. Using the case of Indonesia, this article examines the country's policy responses to China's RMB internationalization strategy. It uncovers that Indonesia frames its engagement with RMB internationalization not merely as an endorsement of China's global ambitions but as a strategic move to hedge against US dollar vulnerability and to foster broader Asian regional integration, particularly in terms of currency cooperation. This article enriches the existing literature, providing a nuanced perspective on how states navigate the complexities of international economic diplomacy, crafting narratives that align with their strategic interests and policy objectives in the evolving landscape of global currency politics.

The competition between China and the United States is worsening in the Indo-Pacific region. With the evolution of the Indo-Pacific regional order, Southeast Asian countries find themselves at the forefront of competition. Most Southeast Asian countries face three main choices. The first choice is to support the current superpower, the United States; The second option is to cooperate with China and join the BRI initiative; The third option is a strategic hedge between China and the United States. This study focuses on the Southeast Asian region, taking Indonesia as the research object, and analyzes how Indonesia, as a middle power, adopts a hedging strategy to carry out excellent power balance diplomacy. Indonesia has adopted the “Global Maritime Fulcrum Strategy (GMF)” as the primary measure to deal with BRI and FOIP. In this paper, a literature review and case study are used to study. The first part mainly expounds on balanced diplomacy between a middle power and an major power, and the second part focuses on Indonesia as the research object. Through a case study, it analyzes the background, current policies, achievements, and significance of GMF strategy and explains the hedging strategy of Indonesia, a middle power, to balance China and the United States.

This study aims to analyze Indonesia's foreign policy strategy during 2014-2019 toward the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) initiated by China�s Xi Jinping. The study focuses on how Indonesia defends its national interests, that is to become the Global Maritime Fulcrume (PMD). Under the administration of President Joko Widodo, PMD's vision has been translated into efforts to build infrastructure and enforce the law in Indonesian waters, one of which is to eradicate illegal fishing. The results of the study found that the policy triggered positive and negative responses from China. Regarding the opportunity to invest in Indonesia's infrastructure development, China responded enthusiastically. However, in the context of eradicating its state-owned fishing vessels, China has tried to use various means, including using its investment as an instrument to influence Indonesian policies.
