Twenty-eight standard penetration test (SPT) hammers owned by the North Carolina Department of Transportation and private consultants were used to investigate the average energy efficiency and variability of manual versus automatic hammers, as well as the effect of SPT rod length on hammer efficiency. The results agree with published data in several regards. Automatic hammers in the study were found to have an average transferred efficiency of 80.9%. This finding agrees very well with the 80% efficiency assumed in geotechnical engineering practice for automatic hammers. Manual hammers in the study averaged 63.9%, close to the 60% efficiency assumed for manual hammers. Manual hammers were found to be twice as variable as automatic hammers in transferred energy from blow to blow within an SPT blow count. The study demonstrated that the measured transferred energy appeared to be affected by rod length. Lengths shorter than approximately 40 ft caused reduced energy to be transferred into the rod. An empirical formula is presented for correcting short rod length energy losses. The data did not demonstrate a strong dependence on SPT N-value, although the data set lacked observations where the N-value was less than 6 blows per ft.

Revisión sistemática de pruebas para obtener los parámetros geotécnicos del suelo: tendencias, alcances y limitaciones resumenEl presente trabajo tiene como objetivo hacer una revisión de los ensayos que se realizan in situ para obtener los parámetros geotécnicos de un terreno. En primer lugar, se inicia con la descripción de los mismos exponiendo la problemática respecto a su aplicación en el tipo de suelo y luego se detalla cada uno de estos tales como SPT, CPT, DPSH, DPL y corte con veleta especificando desde el día que estos ensayos se iniciaron en la aplicación geotécnica como también su utilización. Estos ensayos aplicados in situ son muy importantes por lo que es necesario conocer cada uno de ellos desde su inicio y los cambios que han tenido en la aplicación geotécnica hasta la actualidad.

The virtual calibration chamber technique, based on the discrete element method, is here applied to study the standard penetration test (SPT). A macro-element approach is used to represent a rod driven with an impact like those applied to perform SPT. The rod is driven into a chamber filled with a scaled discrete analogue of a quartz sand. The contact properties of the discrete analogue are calibrated simulating two low-pressure triaxial tests. The rod is driven changing input energy and controlling initial density and confinement stress. Energy-based blowcount normalization is shown to be effective. Results obtained are in good quantitative agreement with well-accepted experimentally-based relations between blowcount, density and overburden. It is also shown that the tip resistance measured under impact dynamic penetration conditions is close to that under constant velocity conditions, hence supporting recent proposals to relate CPT and SPT results.
