Review of Selected Advances in Electrical Capacitance Volume Tomography for Multiphase Flow Monitoring

Abstract: Electrical Capacitance Volume Tomography (ECVT) has emerged as an attractive technology for addressing instrumentation requirements in various energy-related multiphase flow systems. ECVT can monitor multiple flow conditions and reconstruct real-time 3D images from capacitance measurements using a large set of electrode plates placed around the processes column enclosing the sensed flow system. ECVT is non-intrusive and allows the measurement of changes in mutual capacitance between all possible plate pair com… Show more

“…However, during image reconstruction, the real-time performance of more complex algorithms is poor and conventional algorithms is difficult to guarantee accuracy. Additionally, the challenges associated with detecting weak capacitance and the soft field characteristics of capacitance measurement [57,58] have yet to be addressed. Hence, this method remains in the progress of laboratory research, which cannot be applied in practical engineering.…”

“…On the one hand, adding independent capacitance measurements leads to less ill-posed equations [6]. Increasing the measurement electrodes [7][8][9][10][11] is a common way to increase the measurement data. Increasing the number of electrodes means reducing the size of electrodes.…”

“…A disadvantage is the comparatively low imaging quality, which stems from the soft-field nature of the electric fields within the sensor. Yet, despite the comparatively low imaging quality, electrical tomography systems have seen emerging use as underlying instruments in measurement, e.g., for flow metering of particulate matter in pneumatic conveying [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26].…”
